Project idea (in English)

Prevention of tick-borne diseases in the frontier area between Poland and Ukraine Ixodes ricinus is the most common species of ticks widely prevalent in Poland and Europe. These arthropods are of great medical and veterinarian importance, and constitute a reservoir and vector of many pathogens (e.g. Borrelia burgdorferi s.l.). The presence of national borders does not prevent the spread of ticks, and this brings about the risk of the spreading of the diseases transmitted by them. It is planned to recognize this situation in the frontier area of Eastern Poland, compared to the adjacent areas in Ukraine. Recognition of the occurrence and co-occurrence of pathogens in ticks, and seroprevalence among the population would allow an effective implementation of programmes to counteract morbidity due to the diseases caused by these pathogens. Cooperation between the two countries will contribute to an increase in the awareness and knowledge of the population, decrease in the risk of contracting tick-borne diseases and implementation of effective laboratory diagnostics on the part of Ukraine.
